MOCHILAS ARHUACAS
Authentic, Artisan Handcrafted with straps and fringes, they are made by a group of indigenous who live in La Guajira Peninsula in northern Colombia. Weaving is a traditional activity that has been passed down from their ancestors and is representative of their cultural identity. A mochila/shoulder bag/purse or “knapsack” is a handmade bag unique to the woman who weaves it. Each mochila is hand-made by one woman and each woman has her own signature. 100% cotton. Each bag has its own character with different colors and patterns.Typical motifs are geometrical figures that represent the natural elements-aniamal,plants-stars. The Wayuu method of weaving is a complex form of art done entirely by hand. Their weaving knowledge is passed down from mother to daughter for generations . It takes a female between 30 to 60 days to hand weave a mochila. Love, respect for Mother Earth and ancestral wisdom are all transmitted into the weaver's needle and forever cherished in the Mochila's essence. No two will ever be exactly alike. Dimensions of the bag are approx 12 inches tall x 14 inches wide. The shoulder strap is approx 3 inches wide and 42 inches long.
